Ultra Compact & Low Profile Solution

The XCL205/206/207 series are 600mA, 3MHz synchronous step-down DC-DC converters with integrated inductor. The whole solution, including 1.5uH inductor, measures only 2.5mm x 2.0mm and has a package profile of only 1.0mm making it one of the smallest solutions of its kind on the market today. To limit the height of the combined coil and DC/DC converter to 1.0mm, a new ultra-flat package (USP-6EL) with a height of 0.4 mm was developed for the DC/DC converter (Fig.1)

Requiring only 2 external ceramic capacitors to configure a step-down circuit capable of providing efficiencies in excess of 85%, the XCL205/206/207 is ideally suited for applications that require high efficiency plus low output noise in an extremely small PCB area (Fig.2).

Simple Structure!

What makes the XCL205/206/207 stand out from the competition is the technology used to bring the IC and the inductor together in one package. Existing solutions tend to use conventional packaging techniques where the DC/DC die is placed along side a coil in a moulded package. Torex have developed a unique system with their inductor partner that actually places the thin-film power inductor around the converter, a process similar to stacking, thereby enabling ultra small, all in one solutions to be realized (Fig.3) !

Simple structure with the XC9235/36/37 series merely attached under the coil.

Great Performance!

The step-down converter used in the XCL205/206/207 is the XC9235/36/37 series which are synchronous step-down DC/DC converters with a 0.42Ω (typ) P-channel driver transistor and a 0.52Ω (typ) N-channel switching transistor built-in.

The XCL205 series is PWM control, and the XCL206 series is PWM/PFM control, which switches automatically from PWM to PFM during light loads meaning that high efficiencies (Fig.4) can be achieved over a wide range of load conditions. The XCL207 allows the user to select either PWM only or PWM/PFM auto switching via the CE/Mode pin.

Input voltage range is 2.0V to 6.0V and output voltages from 0.8V to 4.0V (+/-2%) can be selected in 50mV steps (factory laser trimmed). With high efficiency synchronous converters, such as the 3MHz XC9235/36/37 series, output ripple of typically less than 10mV can be achieved (Fig.4).

The XCL205/206/207 also offers very fast transient performance (Fig.5).

The XCL205/206/207 B and C types feature an auto CL discharge function. In addition, the B type also has a high speed soft-start function (0.25ms typ. compared to 0.9ms typ. with the XCL205/206/207 A and C types). All versions feature a built-in current limiter (constant current and latching) and short circuit protection. A CE pin enables the device to be put into stand-by thereby reducing current consumption from an already low 21uA typ. in operation to less than 1.0uA in stand-by.

Compared to a LDO, the XCL206 distributes heat much more evenly as well as at a much lower temperature thereby maximising thermal efficiency.
